MANUAL THERAPY

When musculoskeletal dysfunction is identified, special techniques are available to restore and heal injured muscles. Intravaginal, intrarectal and/or external manual therapy techniques help relax muscle spasms and guarding, melt away trigger points and release restricted tissues. Restored muscles will result in improved function, decreased pain and greater overall stability. We are also trained and certified in intramuscular trigger point release (a.k.a. Dry Needling). For more information on this technique, please see "Pain Relief".

THERAPEUTIC EXCERSISES

Whether the goal is to build strength, add spinal stability, lose weight or improve bone density, our unique, customized exercise programs will safely and effectively provide whole body, lasting results.

BIOFEEDBACK/SEMG

Electromyograph (EMG) biofeedback has been shown to produce rapid and significant development of strength when combined with more traditional forms of physical therapy. It has been successfully used for muscle reeducation and muscle strengthening and down-training spastic/guarded muscles, as typically seen in women with pelvic pain. However, the GOLD standard of biofeedback is manual biofeedback. Although it requires additional education, this is the type of biofeedback that our specialists are skilled and trained to performed and will most often utilize.

NON-PHARMACEUTICAL PAIN MANAGEMENT

We use a variety of non-pharmeceutical pain management techniques to help individuals reach their health goals and sustain their results without addictive substances.  For more information, please see “Pain”.

POSTURAL EDUCATION/BODY MECHANICS TRAINING

Pain can cause individuals to stand, move and breathe in limited or painful ways. When the pain becomes chronic and/or severe, faulty posture and positioning commonly become habitual. At WFR, we are trained in assessing postural, breathing and movement pattern impairments and will help convert bad habits into good while decreasing pain and preventing future injuries.

CHILDBIRTH PREPARATION

WFR Pelvic Health & Wellness Specialists aims to raise the bar in women’s health with cutting edge treatments and injury prevention. In doing so, our “Take Action” initiative was born to help women prevent injuries that occur during childbirth. These one-on- one birthing prep sessions help expecting moms to adequately prepare for laboring, delivery and post-partum phases. Treatments include laboring positions, energy conservation, partner-assisted techniques during early, active and transition phases of labor, pushing techniques needed for vaginal delivery, pelvic floor assessment, preparation to decrease risk of vaginal trauma, c-section management and post-partum do’s and don’t’s. Women First has also partnered with PostPartum Strong® to provide a comprehensive, whole-body program to help moms get their bodies back into shape!

ONE-ON-ONE YOGA SESSIONS

Our customized yoga therapy sessions use yoga postures, breathing exercises, and meditation to improve mental and physical health and strengthen from the inside out. The holistic focus of yoga therapy encourages the integration of the mind, body, and spirit. Yoga therapy allows individuals to maintain progress made during physical therapy visits and serves as a great transition, after being discharged, to sustain overall wellness, strength and endurance. For pelvic pain patients, exercise often increases symptoms and irritation; however, Women First’s specialists have developed a specific protocol to allows patients the opportunity to “work out” without causing pelvic flares.

AROMATHERAPY

Aromatherapy uses essential oils to improve an individual’s health or mood. For example, peppermint is an analgesic (pain reliever), anti-spasmotic (relieves spasms), and is a vasodilator (open the blood vessels). A few drops of peppermint in a base oil, such as sweet almond oil or coconut oil, can be applied to relieve headaches, muscle aches, and nausea. It also has mood-elevating properties. Our certified aromatherapist provides exclusive oil blends with the highest, medical grade oils to help individuals increase their health, improve their moods and decrease their stress.
